Confirming Neil Gorsuch

The battle over the next Supreme Court Justice has only begun with threats to delay the process and attempts to stop it already underway. Republican leadership hope to finalize the confirmation by Friday, April 7th.

A Supreme Court nominee has never faced the type of political maneuvering Judge Neil Gorsuch will face this week. It is politics at its worst. At issue is the fact that Republicans in the Senate refused to consider Merrick Garland, a nominee from President Obama, chosen to fill the seat vacated by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016. Justice Scalia had been the most conservative Justice on the Court and Republicans wanted a replacement just like him.

Justices are supposed to be politically neutral, but over the years have “legislated from the bench” more and more frequently. This makes the balance of conservative-leaning Justices to liberal-leaning Justices more desirable than ever before. But, what the nation really needs is a Justice who will honor the Constitution.

Everyone wants something, but this is what we know—Judge Gorsuch is a conservative-leaning judge who is a strict constitutionalist. He will interpret the laws up against what the U. S. Constitution actually says or allows for, period. We know he stands for life, as he wrote a comprehensive book on the subject of euthanasia. He is a conservative that is feared by liberals with varying agendas. He is a man that was once unanimously appointed by the Senate to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006. He is the wrong man to attack so viciously.

Points for prayer and action:

  • Pray that attempts by liberal Senators to hinder or stop the appointment of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court would be limited. Decree into the process, “Peace! Be still!”

  • Pray that God will intervene and bring the Senate together once again in peace and unity. This will take a miracle.

  • Pray for all Supreme Court Justices to return to the task of impartially interpreting laws as constitutional or not, as opposed to “legislating from the bench.”

  • Contact your Senators and make them aware of your support for Neil Gorsuch. Ask them to give this man an honest up or down vote.

May God’s grace abound,

Mike and Cindy Jacobs
